It is for this reason that consumer mailing lists will be composed of different selection criteria to business mailing lists. Rather than factors such as the size of the company or the business sector, the main consideration will be age, occupation, home value, and other more general factors.

Consumer mailing lists could also be composed of customers who have previously bought a product or service, such as if they have signed up to receive a particular catalog. In this case, they would be considered good sales leads as they would have already shown interest in a particular area.

The response rates are affected directly by how efficiently the consumer mailing list is targeted. Even if a great product is being sole, if it does not reach the people who will be interested in buying it then the sale will fail.

It is therefore important to consider selecting people based on the demographics of age, marital status, occupation, whether they are a credit card holder, and many more similar factors. Knowing exactly who the target consumer is will have a direct correlation on how successful a tool the mailing list will be.
