 Telemarketing lists, also known as call lists or phone lists, are compiled of the data of consumers or businesses, and are then sold to allow companies to contact the people directly by telephone in order to provide information about a product or service and try to make a conversion.Telemarketing lists can be brought or rented from list brokers, who also offer free lists on some occasions, although the quality of such lists is often lower than the ones that ask for a fee. Lists are obtained in a number of different ways. One such method is carried out by a list compiler, who converts raw data from such institutions as the census bureau or the county court house records, which is then cross referenced with telephone companies to find the telephone numbers. Alternatively, lifestyle information is usually gathered through surveys or questionnaires which offer money or prizes as a reward for filling them in. Then there are list managers who manage their own lists, usually compiled of customers who have purchased a product or are signed up to receive their catalog. The lists are rented out and are specific to a particular market, making them particularly valuable to marketers. As well as list compilers and list managers, list brokers also provide a valuable service. It is their job to find particular lists for unique campaigns, helping to narrow down the search for an appropriate list on a company’s behalf. According to US law, there are certain legalities that need to be adhered to for any company carrying out a telemarketing campaign. There is a ‘Do Not Call’ list which, if people sign up to, means that they cannot be called up for any reason. Also, callers have to stick to certain times of the day to make their calls, which at present is between 8am and 9pm, although these times can change.
